Our products come from the coastal city of
Essaouira in the south of Morocco. This city flourished under the Portuguese
in the 1500's. It was then called Mogador. They lost it in 1541 and it fell
into decline. In the 1760's, Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah rebuilt it
as a city for foreign trade. The architect was a captured Frenchman. Essaouira is surrounded by forests of mountain cypress. This pyramidal tree grows to between 5 and 16 meters tall. It is found in hot dry areas of SE Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Lybia, and Malta. It has a conical or oval crown, a straight trunk, and grooved greyish-brown bark. The government of Morocco is carefully preserving these forests for the enjoyment of generations to come. |
